INSTALLATION of frangible pins

INSTALLATION OF FRANGIBLE PINS

This system is extremely simple to install, however it must be done correctly. It is vital that the pin breaks under the load for which it has been designed. The frangible pin will perform properly providing the installer has installed it correctly. (30mm variation means the effective strength of the pin will be increased or decreased by 43%).

For correct installation you need 3 parts. 1). 2 Post Sleeves 2). 2 Frangible Pins 3). 2 Retaining Clips
STEP 1. 1). Auger 1½ inch or 38.1 mm Ø . 2). Auger the hole ½ " or 12 mm below the bottom of the rail. 3). Drill a hole completely through the vertical post.
STEP 2. Drive the post sleeve into the post. This is made easier by smearing the sleeve with liquid soap.
STEP 3. The post sleeve must protrude from the front of the post so that the locking hole and the first marker line are visible.
STEP 4. Insert the frangible pin into the sleeve.
STEP 5. 1). Place the rail on the frangible pin. 2).Move the pin so that the setting mark on the pin is exactly under the centre of the rail. 3). Lock the frangible pin in place using the retaining clip.
STEP 6. Correct setting.
STEP 7. 1). Secure the rail in position. 2) The rail must be able to fall 40 cms if the pin breaks.

NOTES TO INSTALLATION
The same post sleeve is used for either the Regular or Long Pin.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: An AUGER must be used for the installation of the post sleeve and NOT a wood drill bit.

An auger has a screw point which pulls the cutting section through the post in a straight and true line, and will not slip / move when meeting resistance.
Packing out: Secure a piece of wood between the post and the rail. (a 40 mm thick piece of packing in the case of a 150 mm Ø rail).
