The horse thermometer is remarkably easy to use and will tell you immediately before the first signs of illness. It is placed in the horses mouth to the side. It will give you an instantaneous reading.
It is a good idea to know what the 'normal' is for your horse - It should be noted that taking the temperature by mouth the reading will be consistently lower than if taken rectally. It should be between 35.5 and 37.5 degrees Centigrade (95.9 to 99.5 degrees fahrenheit). If you take your horse's temperature as a matter of course then you will know immediately if your horse is sickening for anything.
